Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is a North American native tree, where it is grown for its timber. There is a single specimen planted a few years ago in meadow at Downlee Lodge. It is one of the few trees on the site that was not chosen for its wildlife potential but for its appearance. Tulip Tree is a fast growing, tall tree with a straight trunk. It has distinctive four lobed, delicate green, leaves that turn golden yellow in autumn. It is known for its exquisite tulip shaped flowers that appear in May-June but only after 15-20 years. The tree at Downlee Lodge has not flowered yet. That is something we look forward to.
