Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) trees grow to great age and girth. There is only one Sweet Chestnut on the Wildlife Site. That is a relatively young specimen planted in Field Corner W2, near the top of Field 2. The male and female catkin flowers, which are popular with bees, are borne in June-July and develop in autumn into spiky shelled fruit, each containing several of the familiar shiny brown, edible nuts. The tree on the Wildlife Site bore fruit in 2021 indicating it has already reached maturity.
