Silver Birch (Betula pendula) is familiar as an elegant tree with thin, drooping branches and white bark. It is a native tree that supports a large number of insect species. Male and female catkins flower in spring. The numerous small seeds that follow in summer are a popular food for small birds such as goldfinches and greenfinches.
There are three silver birch trees planted on the Wildlife Site, in Field Corner W2. Silver Birch is known as a hardy tree but these have not done very well in this windy location and have developed leaning trunks despite repeated attempts to support the growing trees.
