There are some magnificent, old and tall Beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees in the area surrounding Downlee Lodge and Bankhall Drive. Others have been planted in Field Corners W3, W4 and some have died. Beech flower in April-May and the beech nuts (beech mast) that develop and fall in autumn are eaten by mice, squirrels and birds.
