Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) are present throughout the year in the lightly wooded corridors and field corners of the wildlife site, often visiting the bird feeders in Downlee Lodge garden and breeding nearby. Young woodpeckers have a red cap and mature males a red patch on the back of the neck.
Some other birds that we regard as woodland birds such as Nuthatch (Sitta europaea), are seen frequently in the lightly wooded areas of the site and garden. Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris) and Jay (Garrulus glandarius) are seen there occasionally.
