Pigeons & Doves

Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus), Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), Stock Dove (Columba oenas), Racing Homer Pigeon (Columba livia domestica) have all occurred here.

Wood Pigeons are ever-present in all of the Wildlife Site fields. Large flocks, sometimes of 50-100 pigeons, are seen in Field 5, often feeding with other birds. A pair of woodpigeons are usually in Downlee Lodge garden, feeding, courting, mating and nesting in trees there. We associate their complex cooing song with past camping holidays.

Elegent Collared Doves have occasionally visited Downlee Lodge garden.

A Stock Dove has only been seen on one occasion feeding there.

On several occasions in the past Racing Homing Pigeons have become lost and spent time, sometimes days, resting at Downlee Lodge. One returned to its grateful owner only after being released from a local hill top.
