The Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is a relative newcomer to the Wildlife Site pond. The bankside vegetation is cut short around two thirds of the ponds perimeter in order to provide access for young lapwings but moorhens prefer long vegetation. The rushes around the pond were longer than usual in summer 2021 and two moorhens were noticed there for the first time in June 2021. In August 2021 we were pleased to see two young moorhens swimming on the pond, each accompanied by an adult.
