Gulls

Gulls are a common sight on the Wildlife Site particularly on Field 5. As with most farms, gulls often follow hay making and other farming operations. Most of the gulls seen here are the Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) but Common Gull (Larus canus) and Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) have also been sighted. All three are Amber Listed Birds of Conservation Concern. They do not breed on the Wildlife Site.

Black headed gulls are seen throughout the year but large flocks, up to 650, feed in Field 5 in winter and spring. In spring and summer adults have a dark brown head but in autumn and winter this is reduced to a dark spot behind the eye.

One or two Common Gulls and Lesser Black-backed gulls are sometimes seen feeding in Field 5
