Tortoiseshell

The common Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is seen mainly from May to October in the garden and areas around Downlee Lodge and also in the wildflower and hay meadows of the wildlife site. Some of the Small Tortoiseshell seen here are larger than others (photograph below) but are not to be confused with Large Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros), which is a different species, larger and with more dark spots on the forewing and is not seen here.
