The Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) is sometimes seen in the garden and area around Downlee Lodge when it arrives from North Africa in spring. In this species the underside of the wings is particularly delicately patterned and coloured. As noted in the News section of this website, Painted Lady butterflies were seen in late June 2019 feeding on bramble flowers next to the railway and public footpath at the top end of the wildlife site.
