The familiar Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is usually only seen at night time in the hedgerows of the wildlife site and most frequently on night cameras in the garden of Downlee Lodge. The ability to roll into a ball provides protection against some predators but not badgers and not against a variety of other important threats. The Hedgehog is now classified as vulnerable on the Red List of British Mammals of conservation concern.
