The familiar Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) which was originally introduced into the UK as a curiosity is now widely regarded as a pest. Grey squirrels are frequently seen in the lightly wooded areas of the wildlife site and particularly around Downlee Lodge throughout the year. The squirrels feed on a variety of tree seeds and nuts but also show great ingenuity in raiding feeders and storage containers of food intended for other wildlife and domestic animals on the Site. We expect to be able to outwit a squirrel in a battle to protect a food store but their athleticism and persistence sometimes makes this embarrassingly difficult.
