The Common Pipistrelle Bat (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), which is only a few centimetres long and is legally protected, is seen on warm summer evenings flying around the trees and hedgerows at Downlee Lodge. Adult and young Pipistrelles have occasionally found their way into the house. Adults are released immediately by opening windows. If possible young and juveniles are returned to a safe place where mothers can find them at dusk. Successful rearing of bats by hand is notoriously difficult and should not be attempted without due consideration.
