As far as we are aware there are no badger sets on the Wildlife Site but there are in the surrounding area. We have occasionally seen badger here on CCTV and cameras at night. Badger (Meles meles) is a legally protected species in the UK, loved by many people but not by farmers because badgers contribute to the spread of TB amongst cattle. Badgers kill and eat hedgehogs and there is video evidence of badgers raiding the nests of ground nesting birds including lapwings, which is of concern to us. One winter a hungry badger broke into two of our hen coops and killed bantams on two consecutive nights, leaving claw marks on the broken woodwork, unmistakable footprints in the snow and appearing on CCTV in the same place the following night.
